Mr. Tommy Lamar Roberts, 79 of Quitman passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family and loving friend. He was born on January 26, 1941 in Brooks County to the late Homer Frances Roberts and Hazel Simmons Roberts. Tommy was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Roberts. He was a retired auto mechanic having owned and operated Tommy's Garage in Quitman for many years. Tommy loved to hunt and fish! He served as president of Nutall Rise Hunting and Fishing Club for many years. He was an avid Nascar and stock car racing fan. He could be seen racing #28 at the Thunderbowl Speedway on any given weekend. Tommy was a regular for breakfast at the Royal Cafe where men gathered to discuss worries of the world and how best to solve them. He proudly served his country in the Georgia National Guard and was a member of the Quitman First Baptist Church.
Tommy is survived by his son, Blake and his wife Teresa Roberts; his grandchildren, Macie Roberts, April Allen, & Honey and Timothy Clardy; brother in law, Sonny and Janice Phillips; sister in law, Sandra and Willis Cooper; he is also survived by his special friend, Polly DeVane; and numerous special and devoted friends. Tommy was preceded in death by his mother in law, Myrtice "Muv" Phillips.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery with Rev. Steve Shierling officiating. The family will be receiving friends Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Maxwell-Purvis Funeral Home. The family request that everyone wear mask and respect social distancing at the visitation and service.
