Sylvia Ann Cowan, 72 of Adel passed away Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at her residence. Sylvia was born in Atlanta on August 16, 1949 to the late Walter & Ann Hart Long. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Adel and retired from Cook County Board of Education as a teacher/coach. Sylvia attended Meriweather in Woodbury, GA and was a member of the basketball and tennis team, where they won state championship when Sylvia was a junior and a senior. Sylvia and Frankie met at Georgia Southern, where they both graduated from. Their first date was to play tennis.
They came to Cook County in 1974 and it was one of the best decisions ever made. They coached girls basketball for 15 years together, and tennis team for 8 years. Sometimes people would ask them how many children they have, and Sylvia & Frankie would tell them 45 boys and 15 girls. People would look at them as a question mark, and they would tell them, we have no children as our own, but the children we coached, we loved them like our own and still do.
We are thankful for the people of Cook County and Adel for allowing us to live our lives together here in true love, joy and peace. We could not have ask for a better place to live our lives together.
Survivor includes her husband, Frankie Cowan of Adel.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, June 18, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery Annex with Rev. Mike Ruffin officiating.
