Mary Pickels

Mary Casteloes Pickels, 79 of Quitman went to meet Jesus on the morning of August 23, 2023 at the Presbyterian Home in Quitman. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend to many.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Howard B. Pickels; her daughter, Karen Hiers (Sammy) of Quitman; son, Anthony Pickels (Krista) of Ochlocknee, GA,; two grandchildren, Savanna (Jazzi) Pickels and Traci-Ann Pickels both of Quitman; and by many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph B. and Hulda Casteloes; brothers, J.G. Casteloes, Edward Casteloes, Sr, Don Casteloes, Willie Casteloes, and Raymond Snipes; and her granddaughter, Mary Margaret Pickels.

Mary was born and grew up in Moultrie, GA and graduated from Moultrie High School in 1962. She worked at Riverside Manufacturing in Moultrie for 20 plus years before she attended Brewton Parker College and received her Bachelor in Education degree after her children were out of school. She taught many years at North Brooks Elementary School in Quitman until her retirement. She was a member of First Baptist Church Quitman.

In her spare time she enjoyed taking care of her family and shopping with her daughter and granddaughters. Mary loved to travel with Senior Adult groups to various parts of the United States.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 26, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church Quitman with Rev. Sammy Hiers and Rev. Steve Shierling officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Maxwell - Purvis Funeral Home.
