Marsha Sumner Maupin Obituary

Marsha Sumner Maupin, age 57, of Lenox, Georgia passed away peacefully Friday morning, April 23, 2021 at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta, Georgia. Marsha was born on September 19th 1963 in Cook County to Mr. Ray Gene Sumner and Mrs. Laverne Sumner of Lenox, Georgia. Born into the Sumner farming family, Marsha was no stranger to hard work and determination. Her fiery spirit and determined nature would become hallmarks of her attitude as she grew into adulthood. Marsha would regularly wake up in the early mornings with her beloved father Ray Gene Sumner to take on a day full of hard work in the Sumner tobacco fields.

Marsha continued her determined pursuit eventually becoming a Tax Levying Officer for The Georgia Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). In 1993 she pivoted her career to the Georgia Department of Revenue where she built a name for herself and made invaluable colleagues who would become lifelong friends. Marsha retired from the Georgia Department of Revenue in 2012.

She had a passion for the outdoors which stemmed from her childhood on the farm. She absolutely loved the ocean and traveling. Particularly traveling to Athens, Georgia where she was an avid Georgia Bulldogs fan and enjoyed tailgating. Over the years, Marsha built a network of friends that would extend all over the United States. Despite her travels, Marsha never forgot where she grew up on the Sumner family farm. She lived in Berrien County for a number of years before eventually moving to Valdosta. She loved fashion and would light up any room she set foot in. Her spirit was absolutely infectious. Marsha was anchored by her family. She was the first born of four siblings.

Marsha was preceded in death by her husband of 15 years, Everett Lee Maupin. She is survived by her close Friend Olen Calicutt of Valdosta, Georgia.

She is further survived by her daughter, Jayde Hogan Averitt of Lenox; her two grandsons, Alex Harris and Gage Averitt of Lenox; her two parents, Ray Gene Sumner and Laverne Sumner of Lenox; her brother and sister-in-law, Chad and Kim Sumner of Lenox; her sister and brother-in-law Shae and Lance Roberts of Kathleen, Georgia; her sister Hanna Sumner of Lenox. She is further survived by and her nieces and nephews, Peyton R. Sumner, Anzley Roberts, John Sumner, Gabe Roberts, and Madison Sumner. Beyond this, Marsha has a large loving extended family in a number of close aunts, uncles, and cousins.
