It is with sadness we announce the passing of our son and brother Joey Tanner on November 20, 2021, from complications of a major stroke in June of 2020. Joey was born in Valdosta, Georgia on October 12, 1966, to Jack and Pat Tanner of Quitman. He is preceded in death by his father, Jack B. Tanner, Sr. and his aunt and uncle Grady and Judy Williams of Quitman.
Joey graduated from Brooks County High school and Valdosta State College. He started playing the drums in junior high school and continued to play mostly in the bands “The Boomers” and “Tannerslane” with his brother Chip Tanner. He was not only a well-respected musician and drum teacher but was also well known for his abilities as a sound man and knowledgeable consultant on all things drum and sound system related. He was a long-time employee at Rutland’s Music in Valdosta. Besides his passion for music, Joey loved fishing and motorcycle riding with his friends.
Joey passed away in his 55th year and was lovingly cared for at Fellowship Home at Brookside for the last year of his life.
He is survived by his mother, Pat Tanner of Quitman, his brother Chip Tanner and his wife Suzanne of Quitman and his uncle Jeff and aunt Cheryl Massey of Valdosta and Plymouth, Ohio. He was the beloved uncle of Victoria Tanner of Quitman and Andrea Evans of Plymouth, Ohio and her children Zoey, Evan, and Isak Strom.
There will be no public service at this time. Memorials or donations in Joey’s honor may be made to The Quitman Church of God Family Life Center building fund, P.O. Box 956 Quitman, GA 31643.
