Joel Parrish Holmes, 65, died at his home in Adel, GA. Joel was born March 14, 1956 in Adel to the late Joe and Dixie (Schultz) Holmes. He graduated (valedictorian) Cook High School in 1974 before attending and graduating from Georgia Tech with a degree in Chemical Engineering.
Although Joel’s formal education dealt with the study of chemicals and their application, his analytical mind and knowledge of mechanical issues involving automobiles and precision equipment were equally amazing. Joel possessed a love of muscle cars from the 60’s and 70’s and enjoyed attending the Moultrie Swap Meets where he bought and sold various auto parts and equipment for himself and friends. In the late 80’s and early 90’s he owned Adel Muffler Shop where he strived to provide quality work at a reasonable price. He enjoyed helping his friends solve various chemical and mechanical problems and could often be found at Superior Saw & Tool working on solutions to dissolving resins and others coatings on tools to be sharpened. He was invaluable in helping to design and install oil filtration systems used in some of the larger sawmills and mechanical shops in this area. Joel worked various jobs and developed several patents in his lifetime. Joel was extremely tender-hearted where animals were concerned. He provided food and medical care for many felines who adopted him as their caregiver and had been a volunteer at the Humane Society of Valdosta.
He is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Lisa and Edwin Deariso, of Sylvester; two nieces, Shanna (Danny) Bogeajis and Kayla (Justin) Ply, both of Valdosta; two great nieces and one great nephew; and several cousins.
At his request, no formal service will be held. The family will receive friends at Purvis Funeral Home Saturday, November 20, 2021 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Animal Shelter or Humane Society of your choice.
