William Jerome Dukes, 92, of Quitman passed away at the Presbyterian Home on December 27, 2023. Jerome was born on August 16, 1931, to the late Wordell Dukes and Ethel Renfroe Dukes. As a young man, Jerome served his country in the U.S. Army. Back home, he became a great cook who enjoyed preparing meals for his loved ones. He also enjoyed his time fishing. Another hobby he was fond of was making his home and yard beautiful through his love of flowers. He was a faithful member of Northside Baptist Church. As a member, he played an influential role and was a dedicated worker at the beginning of the now-present Northside Baptist Church. He continued to serve as a leader of the adult men’s Sunday School class and also led the Baptist Men’s Fellowship.
Jerome leaves behind his daughters, Deborah (Lee) Medders of O’Brien, FL, Sylvia Dukes of Albany, Kimberly Dukes of Valdosta, and Zee Anne Dukes of Atlantic Beach, FL; grandchildren, Lyndie Walden, Hugh Hart, Justin Hart, Abbi Hardee, Jake Hardee, Dalton Bruce and Jason Phillips; several great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandsons. He is preceded in death by his wife of over fifty years, Billie Jean Dukes; daughter, Cissie Hardee; grandchild, Jason Harrell; brothers, Renfroe Dukes and Lamar Dukes; and sister, Jean Cashwell.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, at 2:00 P.M. at Oak Hill Cemetery with Rev. Larry Harris and Rev. Sammie Hiers officiating.
