Dr. Roy Cason Wicker, Jr, 100 passed from this life on October 4, 2021. Roy, "Wick", "Papa", "Doc" was born November 2, 1920 in Warrenton, GA. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Quitman and Northside Drive Baptist Church. He attended Spring Street school in Atlanta and later graduated from Warrenton High School in Warrenton, GA. After graduation he attended The Citadal. In June 1941 he enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a Navy Blimp pilot & Instructor (Lighter Than Air) and flew Navy Grumman F4F Hellcats. After the war he graduated Emory Dental School, lived in Atlanta, where he practiced denistry for 25 years.
Dr. Wicker and Dollie, his beloved wife of 69 years moved to Quitman in 1975 where he also practiced dentistry for 15 years and then retired. His love of flying led him to the building and restoration of nine airplanes. His first was an exact replica of Charles Nungesser's 1917 Nieuport 24 Bis that he built in his basement. He was inducted into the Antique Aircraft Association Hall of Fame. Along with being awarded "The Wright Brothers Master Pilots Award" and "The Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award" from the Department of Transportation & FAA.
Survivors include his wife, Dollie Daniel Wicker; three children, Roy (Laurie) Wicker, Cornelia (Ferber) Buckley, and Dan Wicker; grandchildren, Brent Wicker, Leigh Wicker, Palmer Lellyett, Sean Buckley, Ryan Buckley, Bray Buckley, Erin Wicker, Cason Wicker, and ten great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, October 7, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery with Rev. Steve Shierling officiating. The family will be receiving friends Thursday at 12:00 p.m. at Quitman First Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Quitman First Baptist Church.
