Curtis L. Pickels, born in Moultrie, GA on August 27, 1943, passed away on January 19, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, community service, and steadfast love for Jesus Christ. He was a devoted husband, a faithful member First Baptist Church of Quitman, and a respected resident of Quitman, GA.

Curtis was a proud graduate of Mercer University Pharmacy School, marking the beginning of a lifelong commitment to serving others through his profession. In 1968, he made Quitman his home and dedicated himself to the betterment of the community. As a former Mayor of Quitman, Curtis tirelessly worked to enhance the lives of others, leaving an indelible mark on the town he loved.

For over 40 years, Curtis was the proud owner of Lee & Pickels Drug Store, a business that mirrored his commitment to excellence and care. His dedication to the well-being of others went beyond the confines of his business. A generous person, Curtis extended a helping hand to those in need, exhibiting His heart for the Lord. His faith in Jesus Christ was the guiding influence in his life, and he often shared the love of Jesus with those he encountered. Curtis's impact reached far beyond the walls of his pharmacy, touching the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Among the many organizations he served throughout the years, Curtis was a trustee of Mercer University, a member and chairman of the Board of Directors at The Citizens National Bank, a board member of the Harley Langdale Jr. Foundation, a board member and chairman of the Brooks County School Board, chairman of the Brooks County Hospital Authority, and a deacon of First Baptist Church.

Curtis is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Ola Pickels, with whom he shared a lifetime of love, laughter, and unwavering companionship. Their enduring bond was a testament to the strength of their commitment to each other. Additional survivors include brother, Alvan Jerrel Pickels and wife Charlotte of Quincy, FL; brother, Howard Pickels of Quitman, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Sam & Annie Bell Pickels; sisters Lucille Barricklow, and Linda Rice. 

Funeral services will be held Monday, January 22, 2024 at First Baptist Church Quitman at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Troy Walliser, Rev. Marty Carnes, and Rev. Steve Shierling officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Serving as active pallbearers are Trent Walliser, Andrew Carnes, Kasey Knight, Alan Wheeler, Scott Hockenberry, and Patrick Stalvey. The active or inactive deacons of First Baptist Church Quitman will serve as honorary pallbearers.
