Betty Jean Hysmith, 69 of Quitman passed away Thursday, January 4, 2024 at South Georgia Medical Center. Betty was born November 18, 1954 in Quitman to the late Rayford Sapp & Gladys Braswell Sapp. She graduated from Brooks County High School and married Jimmy Lee Hysmith, Sr on June 9, 1973, they were blessed to be married for 50 years. Betty enjoyed working in her flower garden, especially with her favorite flowers, the Gardenia and the Zennias. She also enjoyed cooking for her family, and they all agreed she had the most famous fried cornbread. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Betty was a devoted and beloved member of Hickory Head Baptist Church for over 23 years.  

Survivors include her husband, Jimmy Lee Hysmith, Sr. of Quitman; son, Lee (Shanna) Hysmith, Jr. of Quitman; daughter, Stacey Hysmith of Valdosta; granddaughter, Haley (Austin) King of Valdosta; grandson, Taylor Hysmith of Quitman; one brother, Martin (Karen) Sapp of Quitman; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her two brothers, Glenn Sapp, and Ray Sapp; and sisters, Barbara Garvitte, and Shirley Eddins. 

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Hickory Head Baptist Church with Pastor Glen Scoggin officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. The family will be receiving friends Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Maxwell - Purvis Funeral Home.
