Mr. Gene McDonald, Sr, 84 of Quitman passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at Archbold Medical Center in Thomasville.  Mr. McDonald was born July 12, 1934 to the late Henry Grady McDonald and Hollie Mae Carter McDonald.  Mr. McDonald grew up on a farm in Pavo and was a lifelong farmer.  He graduated from Barwick High School and then attended school in North Carolina where he received a degree as a Lab & X-Ray Technician.  Mr. McDonald married Carolyn Yates of Barwick in 1956.  He worked for 13 years at the Brooks County Hospital and then pursed farming fulltime.  Mr. McDonald was an avid fisherman who loved fishing and spending time at Keaton Beach, Fl.  He was of the Baptist Faith and a family man.  He loved his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren more than anything.  In his later years he loved riding around the farm on his Ranger checking his crops with his dog Dixie.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Yates McDonald of Quitman; children, Eugene Carter (Sandra) McDonald, Jr of Quitman, Sara Ann Rich of Quitman, and Martitia (Donnie) Warren of Quitman; grandchildren, Leslie (Derick) Williams, Keith Williams, Eugene Carter (Leah) McDonald, III, Brant McDonald (Kimberly Graham), Leah (Russ) Butler, Landon Green, and Lauren Warren; great grandchidlren, Henry McDonald, Hudson McDonald, and Easton Butler; one brother, Wilbur McDonald of Moultrie; two sisters, Marie Vermillion of Savannah, and Winnie Lanier of Pavo.  Mr. McDonald was preceded in death by two brothers, Troy McDonald, and Henry Grady McDonald, Jr.; and three sisters, Louise, Trevia Crosby, and Bama Maguire.

Graveside services will be held Friday, March 1, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery with Rev. Clay Luke officiating.  The family will be receiving friends Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Maxwell-Purvis Funeral Home.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Georgia Sheriffs Boys Ranch, 5671 GA Hwy 122, Hahira, GA  31632.
