Era S Addison

February 22, 1933 ~ November 14, 2016 (age 83) 83 Years Old


Mrs. Era S. Addison died at the age of 83 years old on November 14, 2016.  She spent her final year at Taylor Care Center in Jacksonville, Fl., where she resided with her husband, Paul.

Mrs. Addison is survived by her husband, Paul Addison of Jacksonville, formerly of Quitman; daughter, Valerie Sutton of St. Augustine, Fl; son, Zachary Addison of Jacksonville,  Fl.; granddaughters, Meagan Sutton Bowen of St.  Augustine, and Heather Sutton Haddan of Ashford, Al; foster son, Greg Sadler of Enigma, GA; six step-grandchildren, Craig, Chris, Melissa, David, Julie, and Pam.  Mrs. Addison was preceded in death by her brother, Leon Scott and her sister, Jennie-Bell Hicks.  

Mrs. Addison was born in Sparta, TN. on February 22, 1933 to parents Luther and Mattie Mae Scott.    After graduating from Lee College in Cleveland, TN., she moved to Lakeland, FL. to begin her career as a public school teacher.  She married Paul Addison in 1961.  Following the birth of their children, Mrs. Addison worked in the library at Florida Southern College while earning her master's degree in library science from the University of South Florida.

In 1974, Era and Paul moved their family to Brooks County.  Era continued her career as an elementary school teacher and librarian in both Brooks County and Lowndes County, including a few years each as a reference librarian at South Georgia Regional Library and as the librarian at Valdosta State Prison.  

Era loved to nurture children.  In the 1980's, she and Paul became foster parents.  They welcomed over 20 children in need of loving parents into their home.  When their own children moved away, Era and Paul transferred their church membership from First Church of the Nazarene in Valdosta, to the Quitman Church of the Nazarene, where Era served as a Sunday School teacher for many years.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at Maxwell-Miller Funeral Home Rev. Mark Frenier officiating.  Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
